Nineties indie icons EMF return to Scotland for a night at King Tut's, strictly for over-18s.
EMF are back in Glasgow on Friday 11 December, playing King Tut's Wah Wah Hut on St Vincent Street. It's a return to Scotland for the nineties indie quintet, who'll be the only name on the bill that night.
If you're coming to them from the one song everyone knows, that's 'Unbelievable' — the worldwide hit that put them on the map. But there's a fair bit more to the story. They formed in Cinderford, Gloucestershire, in October 1989, and all five original members were already veterans of the local music scene before they got together. The name itself has always been a bit of a talking point: the band says it stood for 'Epsom Mad Funkers', though the common speculation was that the initials actually meant 'Ecstasy Mother Fckers'.
Their sound came together pretty quickly. Within two months of forming they'd played their first gig, and shortly after they picked up a Casio sampler and sequencer in a local thrift shop. That's where the light techno element crept into their rock-oriented sound, and it's what gave them their particular dance-rock edge. Since those early days, the band has a history of disbanding and reforming, so this date is one of the times they've come back together.
