The RSNO, with its two choruses and Shih-Hung Young conducting, plays Howard Shore's score to 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' for the film's 25th anniversary.
The Royal Scottish National Orchestra are bringing The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring to the OVO Hydro on Sunday 6 December, with two performances on the day: one at 11.30am and another at 5.30pm. It's a concert to mark the 25th anniversary of the film, and the whole thing is performed live to the picture, so you'll have the movie running on screen while the orchestra plays the score in the room with you.
Howard Shore's original score is the thing that takes centre stage here. It's an Academy and Grammy Award-winning work, and it's described as one of film music's most complex and comprehensive — it draws on centuries of stylistic tendencies to treat Peter Jackson's film as an immense symphonic work. The arrangement lets the music carry the narrative weight, which changes the experience from watching a film with a soundtrack to hearing the score drive the story in real time.
On stage, the RSNO will be joined by the RSNO Chorus and the RSNO Youth Chorus, with Shih-Hung Young conducting. Having the full orchestra and two choirs together gives the music the scale it needs, especially for the bigger moments that the film is known for. It's a proper orchestral setup, not a reduced version, so you're getting the full sound as it was written.
