The UK's renowned big band swings back to the wartime chart-toppers and hits from the forties, with special guests Ray McVay and The Uptown Hall Jazz Band.
The Glenn Miller Orchestra play the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Tuesday 29 December, a 3pm matinee that falls right in the middle of the post-Christmas lull. They're billed as the UK's most celebrated big band, and the set is built around the wartime chart-toppers and hits from the forties that Miller made famous. It's a big-band sound in the traditional sense: the same stage line-up Miller used for his original orchestra, playing his own arrangements of the songs that defined the swing era.
Mark Porter leads the band as conductor and vocalist, with Catherine Sykes and guest artist John James on vocals. They're joined on stage by special guest Ray McVay, and the sound is rounded out by The Uptown Hall Jazz Band and their vocal group, The Moonlight Serenaders. Between the brass, the woodwind, and the vocalists, it's a full ensemble on stage rather than a small group, so it's a proper big-band afternoon.
The orchestra has been touring Miller's music for years, and the set sticks to the forties: the wartime hits and the swing standards that made the name. It's a matinee, so it's an afternoon outing rather than an evening one, and under-16s have to be accompanied by an adult.
