A therapeutic art workshop led by Joyster Mindfulart where participants learn Pastel Nagomi Art to reduce stress through mindful, tactile creation.
Joyster Mindfulart is running a Pastel Nagomi Art workshop at iCafe Merchant City on Saturday 24 October, with a second date on Saturday 7 November. Both sessions run from 13:00 to 15:00 on the upper floor of the cafe at 72 Ingram Street.
Pastel Nagomi Art is a therapeutic art form from Japan, and the name comes from 'Nagomi', which means calmness, peace and harmony. The whole thing is more about the process than the finished piece, so it's less about what you end up with and more about how it feels to make it. Each session starts with a guided mindful breathing exercise to settle you in, and from there a certified instructor shows you how to grind pastels into powder, mix colours and make paper stencils before you paint directly with your fingertips. Throughout the session, you're encouraged to notice your thoughts, feelings and emotions without judging them.
Lily Houw, founder of Joyster and a Certified Pastel Nagomi Advanced Art Instructor, leads the workshops. You don't need any prior art experience to take part, and all the materials are provided, so you can just turn up. The workshop is part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival, which returns for its 20th year under the theme 'Reflections'. It's suitable for ages 12 and over, and private sessions are available for groups of four or more.
