Double bill of contemporary roots music with Sierra Hull and The Brudi Brothers, part of the Celtic Connections festival.
Sierra Hull and The Brudi Brothers play The Pavilion Theatre on Saturday 23 January, as part of Celtic Connections. It's a double bill, and the two acts perform separately across the evening rather than sharing the stage, so you'll get two distinct sets in one night.
Sierra Hull is one of the most decorated mandolin players working today: seven-time IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year and a six-time Grammy nominee. Her latest album, A Tip Toe High Wire, was her first independent release and picked up four Grammy nominations of its own, with Béla Fleck, Tim O'Brien and Aoife O'Donovan all appearing on it. She's the first female artist to have a Gibson signature mandolin, and she's shared stages with names as varied as Alison Krauss, Eric Clapton, Sturgill Simpson, Slash and Robert Randolph. Her work sits in the bluegrass and Americana tradition, and she's one of the most dynamic voices in that world.
Opening the night are The Brudi Brothers, a Seattle trio who've built their reputation as the city's favourite buskers and street poets. Their 2020 album See You Soon was recorded on a houseboat in Amsterdam, and their live clip of 'Me More Cowboy Than You' went viral with over 10 million views. Between Hull's bluegrass and the Brudis' street-poet approach, the two acts bring contrasting styles to the same bill.
