Drop-in art workshops for children aged 5-12 in the rooftop studio at the Gallery of Modern Art, exploring art techniques and the gallery's collection.
Saturday Art Club is back at the Gallery of Modern Art this Saturday, 17 October, for another morning of making in the gallery's rooftop studio. It's a drop-in session for children aged 5 to 12, so there's no booking needed—you just turn up with the kids and get stuck in. The club runs every Saturday from 10:30am to 12:30pm, and it's completely free.
This particular session is part of a series of Make a Mark workshops running around Black History Month and Big Draw 2026, all drawing on artists from the gallery's own collection. On 17 October, the focus is on designing a sgraffito pot, inspired by the work of Chris Bramble and Najma Hussein Abukar. Sgraffito is a technique where you scratch through a surface to reveal a different colour underneath, so it's a hands-on way of working that's more about the process than the finished piece.
If you've missed the last few, the whole October run has been built around the collection: on 3 October it was drawing with the non-dominant hand, inspired by Walter Price; on 10 October they looked at the colonial history of the GoMA building itself; and on 24 October they'll be making layered monoprints, inspired by Christian Noelle Charles. Each one takes a different artist or theme from the gallery and turns it into something the kids can actually do, rather than just look at.

That's the core of what the club does: families take inspiration from the artworks on display and try out different materials and techniques, from drawing and painting to sculpture, printing and collage. It's part of the wider Glasgow Museums family programme, and the venue itself has a commitment to accessibility—in 2017, GoMA signed up to help Glasgow City Centre become autism-friendly, alongside St Mungo's Museum and the Riverside Museum. The club runs every Saturday from 10 January to 19 December, 10:30am to 12:30pm, with no session on 26 September. It's free and drop-in, so you can just show up at the rooftop studio in Royal Exchange Square.
