US blackgaze band Sadness headline with support from UK post-hardcore group Chalk Hands at The Classic Grand.
Sadness play The Classic Grand on Tuesday 20 April, with UK post-hardcore group Chalk Hands on support. It's a blackgaze night in the city centre, and if you're not familiar with the name, it's a solo project rather than a full band.
Sadness is the work of Damián Antón Ojeda, a Mexican-born musician and multi-instrumentalist who started the project in 2014. He handles everything himself, and the sound sits right at the intersection of atmospheric black metal, shoegaze and dreamlike post-rock. It's known for the way it puts raw, heavy soundscapes alongside delicate, soaring melodies, so you'll get the distorted weight of black metal and the hazy, melodic side of shoegaze in the same set.
Ojeda has been prolific under the name, with more than 50 projects released since the start. Among them is the acclaimed 2019 record I Want to Be There, which gives you a good sense of where the project stands. With Chalk Hands opening, the night pairs that blackgaze sound with the more direct, jagged energy of UK post-hardcore.
