The RSNO performs Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No2 with Roman Borisov on piano and Thomas Søndergård conducting, alongside Dorothy Howell's Lamia and Elgar's Symphony No1.
The RSNO are at The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Saturday 14 November, with Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No2 as the centrepiece. It's a big night that puts three very different works on one bill: Dorothy Howell's Lamia, the Rachmaninov concerto, and Elgar's Symphony No1.
That concerto is the one most people will recognise — a world of dark passions and endless melodies. It's paired here with Howell's Lamia, which she describes as a musical fairy tale with a gorgeous twist, and Elgar's Symphony No1, which opens with one of the greatest tunes ever written by a British composer. Between the three, you've got about 95 minutes of music: Lamia runs 12 minutes, the Rachmaninov 32, and the Elgar 52.
The piano is handled by Roman Borisov, born in 2003, who's one of the most compelling voices of his generation. He won First Prize at the 2022 Kissinger Klavier-Olymp as the competition's youngest participant, studied with the legendary pedagogue Mary Lebenzon at the Novosibirsk Conservatory, and has played at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Konzerthaus Berlin, and the Wiener Konzerthaus. Conducting is Thomas Søndergård, Music Director of both the Minnesota Orchestra and the RSNO, who was decorated with the Order of Dannebrog by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. The evening is given in memory of Tom Bruce-Jones, sponsored by Cirrus Logic and recommended by Classic FM.
