The Punch Brothers bring their acoustic American country-classical chamber music to Celtic Connections, joined by Jesca Hoop.
Punch Brothers are back at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Friday 15 January, as part of Celtic Connections. They're led by mandolinist Chris Thile, and the current line-up brings together guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjoist Noam Pikelny and violinist Brittany Haas. Jesca Hoop opens the night.
It's a welcome return to the festival for them. They've spent nearly two decades working their way across the boundaries of acoustic music, and they describe what they do as 'American country-classical chamber music' or 'virtuoso country-classical chamber music'. It's a fair way of putting it: they take the high lonesome sound of Appalachia and run it through the meticulous precision of a string quartet. The result is something that sits somewhere between a bluegrass band and a classical ensemble, with the mandolin, banjo, guitar, bass and violin all pulling their weight.
They've been playing together for a long time, and the record that won them a Grammy for Best Folk Album, All Ashore, came out in 2018. The Times described their work as 'brilliant, audacious, original and above all, entertaining'. Their latest album, The Unsung Adventures of Punch Brothers, was due in July 2026, so this show comes with new material to draw from alongside the older songs.
