The London African Gospel Choir re-imagines classics from Paul Simon's Graceland album in a celebration of African musical heritage.
The London African Gospel Choir bring their Graceland celebration to The Pavilion Theatre on Monday 16 November, marking 40 years since Paul Simon's album first came out. It's a re-imagining of the record rather than a tribute act, with the choir taking the songs and running with them in their own way. You'll hear the ones you know, like 'You Can Call Me Al' and 'Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes', but they're built around the choir's sound rather than the original recordings.
For context, this show is the choir's critically acclaimed take on Graceland, celebrating African musical heritage with soaring voices and vibrant harmonies doing the heavy lifting. They work across gospel, pop, soul, jazz, R&B and African traditions, connecting generations and transcending borders, and they make it clear that Paul Simon himself doesn't perform.
The night is built on that gospel foundation, so expect the songs to be carried by a full choir rather than a single lead. If you're familiar with the album, you'll recognise the melodies, but they're being sung by a large group instead of one voice. It's a choral interpretation of a record that was always about the meeting of different musical traditions, so the gospel approach fits the source material well.
