A special celebration of contemporary string music as part of Celtic Connections 2027, blending Celtic, American roots, bluegrass and classical traditions.
Natalie & Brittany Haas play The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Monday 18 January, as part of Celtic Connections 2027. They're sisters, and the whole thing is built around that: cello and fiddle at the heart of the sound, with the two of them sharing the stage. It's a celebration of contemporary string music, and they're the only act on the bill.
What they bring together is a bit of a mix. They draw on the Celtic Isles, American roots music, bluegrass and classical traditions, and the set pulls from all of them. The cello and fiddle carry the melodies, and they're playing as a duo, so it's just the two of them on stage. They've each had their own careers in different musical worlds, and this is them coming together to play as a pair.
There's a specific kind of thing that happens when two people have played together their whole lives, and that's what they talk about here: the intuitive interplay and the shared musicianship. It's a performance that's as much about how they listen to each other as what they're playing. The concert is listed under the festival's folk category, which fits the roots and Celtic side of things, but the classical and bluegrass influences pull it in other directions too.
