Scottish tradition meets bold musical imagination with Malin Lewis and Mairearad Green at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, part of Celtic Connections 2027.
Malin Lewis and Mairearad Green play the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Friday 15 January 2027, as part of Celtic Connections. It's a double bill with Lewis as the main feature and Green supporting, and multi-instrumentalist Mike Vass joining them on stage. The whole thing is held in the Strathclyde Suite, at 2 Sauchiehall Street.
Between them, they're working with a specific set of sounds: the smallpipes and the fiddle, with accordion melodies running through. The set moves between driving rhythms, lyrical tunes and more atmospheric passages, and the smallpipes, in particular, sit right at the centre of it. It's a night that draws on Scottish tradition but doesn't stick to one lane, shifting from the faster, rhythmic side of things to the slower, more melodic moments.
Green is also bringing her new album into the mix. She describes it as sounding as old as it does contemporary, and that's a fair way of putting it: she uses low-fi recording techniques and timeless instruments like the small pipes, with haunting vocals accompanied by accordion. Hearing that material live, alongside the other two, gives a good sense of where the whole evening is coming from.
