A family workshop where participants make their own quirky spoon puppet with Camille Pagniez at the Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre.
Camille Pagniez is running a family puppet workshop at the Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre on Wednesday 14 October, with two sessions to choose from: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The idea is simple enough — you make your own quirky spoon puppet and then get to perform with it on the centre's puppet stages. All the materials are provided, so you just need to turn up.
There's a bit of a connection here: Camille Pagniez created many of the puppet and mask kits that are on display in the centre's cafe, so she's worked with their style before. The session is open to families, and the characters you make can be whatever you fancy — a pirate, a princess, a monster, or something entirely your own. Once the puppet is finished, you take it up onto the stage and give it a run-out.
It's worth knowing a bit about where this is happening. The Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre is tucked away in Glasgow's West End at 8-10 Balcarres Avenue, and it's more than just a workshop space. It's a theatre, a museum and an education unit all in one, with an 80-seat theatre, a mask and puppet library and archive, permanent exhibition areas, a mask studio and a marionette carving workshop. Between September and June, they run a regular Saturday Show programme for families, alongside workshops and birthday parties, and they do outreach with schools and community groups. They also lend out two touring exhibitions, The Magic of Masks & Puppets and Behind The Mask, and take on craft commissions and consultancy for the creative industries.
