Songwriter Karine Polwart explores historic and scientific collections at Kelvingrove in song, as part of Celtic Connections.
Karine Polwart brings Curiosity Cabinet to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 January, part of this year's Celtic Connections. It's a two-night run, with both shows starting at 7:45pm, and she's joined on piano by Dave Milligan, with guests appearing throughout.
The whole thing is built around the museum's collections. Polwart spends the two nights working her way through the historic and scientific archives of Kelvingrove and Glasgow's other museums, archives and historic sites, turning them into song. St Mungo's Well in Glasgow Cathedral gets a voice, the unnamed dead of the Necropolis speak, and stories of Irish immigration to the city sit alongside those of its contemporary asylum seekers. Iconic exhibits from Kelvingrove and The Hunterian — radical rocks, Roman remains and Sir Roger the Asian elephant among them — are conjured in song in one of Glasgow's most beloved historic spaces.
