Interactive workshop where Drew Colby teaches participants how to make four specific hand shadow animals.
Drew Colby is back at The Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre on Saturday 28 November for a hand shadow puppet workshop. It's an interactive session where he'll teach you how to make four specific hand shadow animals, so you'll leave with a few shapes you can actually recreate at home.
Colby is a regular at the Centre, and this is a familiar kind of thing for him. He previously staged The Ugly Duckling, his take on Hans Christian Andersen's classic, which he followed up with a workshop called You Can Make Hand Shadows Too. This one sits in that same vein — a practical session where you get to learn the craft by doing it.
The venue itself is a bit of a Glasgow West End curiosity: a theatre, museum and education unit all in one. It's got an 80-seat theatre, a mask and puppet library and archive, permanent exhibition areas, a cafe, a film and FX unit, a mask studio and a marionette carving workshop. They stage shadow, glove, rod, marionette, table-top and black light theatre, and run a regular family Saturday Show programme from September to June, alongside workshops, birthday party events and outreach to schools and community groups. They also tour exhibitions like The Magic of Masks & Puppets and Behind The Mask.
