Weekly karaoke night where attendees sing with a live guitarist at The Riding Room, a queer-friendly cabaret bar in Glasgow.
Guitaraoke is back at The Riding Room on Tuesday 13 October, part of a weekly run that started on 6 October and carries on through to 24 November. If you've missed the first one, it's a straightforward premise: you pick a song and sing it on stage with your own live guitarist backing you. It's karaoke, but with a real person on strings instead of a backing track.
The Riding Room is a cocktail and cabaret bar in Glasgow city centre, and it describes itself as Scotland's favourite Queer Cabaret Bar and a queer-friendly space. It's a busy spot that runs seven nights of on-stage activity every week, mixing live sets, burlesque, side-show and magic. The drinks are served in everything from tin cans and jam jars to silver kettles, and there's an absinthe 'hard liquor cabinet' for when you're feeling adventurous.
Guitaraoke is just one of the regulars. The drag-hosted LOLAPALOOZA takes over on Mondays with Lola Fierce, and the musical-theatre cabaret Broadway Babies is run by the duo Mel and Dean. There's also Tom Harlow's Showtunes & Filth, a high-energy show of showtunes, camp comedy and audience participation. Guitaraoke hands the spotlight to the room, so the night is built around whoever decides to step up and sing.
