Free exhibition at Agora Studios with work by forty-eight artists from across Scotland and beyond, pairing historical tales with contemporary re-imaginings of familiar stories.
Agora Studios opens its doors to a new exhibition on Saturday 24 October, titled Folklore Exhibition. It's the studio's third on-site show, and it runs through to 13 December, so you've got nearly two months to fit it in rather than having to rush over on the opening weekend.
The exhibition brings together work by forty-eight artists from across Scotland and beyond, all drawing on folklore from around the world. The common thread is storytelling as a way of passing things on — the kind of cultural transmission that keeps a story alive across generations. The show pairs historical tales that have stayed virtually unchanged for hundreds of years with contemporary re-imaginings of familiar stories, so you'll see the old and the new sitting side by side.
That's the core of it: how oral traditions carry wisdom from one generation to the next and build bridges between them. With forty-eight artists involved, there's a fair bit to get through, and the folklore comes from all over, not just our own backyard. It's a good chance to see how the same impulse to tell a story shows up in very different ways.
