Free hands-on family sessions to make, create, handle and discuss objects from the museum collection.
Discover is back at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum this Saturday, 17 October, from 1:30pm to 4:00pm. It's a free, drop-in family session, so you can just turn up with the kids without booking anything in advance. The whole point is to get to know the museum's collection by actually doing something with it: you'll either be making and creating, or handling and discussing objects from the galleries. It's hands-on rather than just looking from behind a rope, which makes it a good one for families who'd rather be active than just walking through.
Kelvingrove is one of Scotland's most popular free attractions, and it's a big one. It opened in 1901 and holds more than 8,000 objects across 22 themed galleries, covering art, animals and Ancient Egypt. Among them are Salvador Dalรญ's Christ of St John of the Cross and a real Spitfire. There's a 1901 Lewis and Co organ that gives free daily recitals, and Sir Billy Connolly recorded an exclusive audio tour of the museum. A major collection of Peter Chang's work was also gifted to Glasgow. The building itself is currently undergoing a Glasgow City Council-funded restoration that began in September 2025, so you'll see that work going on while you're there.

Discover runs every Saturday from 1:30pm to 4:00pm, from 29 November 2025 until 19 December 2026, though there are a few gaps to keep in mind: sessions are cancelled on Saturday 10 October, 24 October, 7 November, 21 November and 5 December. It's free to join, and since it's a drop-in, you can come and go as you like within that window. You'll find it at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Argyle Street, Glasgow West End, G3 8AG.
