A new production of Arthur Miller's timeless masterpiece, directed by Dominic Hill, exploring the tragic consequences of the American Dream.
Death of a Salesman opens at the Citizens Theatre on Wednesday 7 April, running through to Saturday 1 May. It's a new production of Arthur Miller's play, directed by Dominic Hill, and it's a joint effort between the Citizens and York Theatre Royal, presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International.
If you've never seen it, the story follows Willy Loman, a travelling salesman who returns home exhausted after thirty-four years on the road. His career is faltering, his debts are piling up, and the American Dream he's chased so relentlessly remains just out of reach. Around him, his family struggle to reconcile the man they love with the tragic consequences of his delusions. It's a play that's been staged countless times, but this is a fresh production rather than a revival of an old one.
It's recommended for ages 12 and over. There are audio-described, captioned and BSL-interpreted performances throughout the run, and a post-show talk to pick things apart after the curtain goes down. The production is a collaboration between the Citizens and York Theatre Royal, so it's a shared project between the two theatres.
