Dutch alternative rock band De Staat bring their industrial grooves and riffs to King Tut's Wah Wah Hut.
De Staat play King Tut's Wah Wah Hut on Friday 13 November, bringing their industrial grooves and riffs to the city. They're a Dutch alternative rock band from Nijmegen, and this is a headline show with them as the sole feature on the bill.
It started as a one-man project when vocalist Torre Florim first envisioned it back in 2006, and it's grown into a full line-up since. Their debut, Wait For Evolution, came out in 2009, followed by Machinery in 2011, I_Con in 2013, and O in 2016. The single 'KITTY KITTY' took its cue from the 2016 US presidential campaign. Florim leads on vocals and guitar, with Tim van Delft on drums, Jop van Summeren on bass, Rocco Bell on percussion, and Vedran Mircetic on guitar.
Their influences run all over the place: Talking Heads, Nine Inch Nails, and Radiohead sit alongside Michael Jackson, Run-DMC, and Soulwax. They've opened for the likes of The Rolling Stones and Muse, and they're often described as one of the most exciting rock bands Holland has produced in decades, drawing comparisons to The Dead Weather, Captain Beefheart, Nick Cave, Steve Reich, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Tom Waits. That's a broad spread to pull from, and it explains why they're hard to pin to one sound.
