An intimate tabletop performance by Tortoise in a Nutshell using 32mm figurines and immersive soundscapes to explore Scotland's drug-related death rate.
Concerned Others comes to Platform Glasgow on Thursday 15 October, a tabletop performance by the award-winning theatre company Tortoise in a Nutshell. It's an intimate piece, staged in response to Scotland's drug-related death rate, which is the highest in Europe. The show draws on the stories of critically underheard voices, bringing together first-hand accounts of lived experience with substance dependency alongside the hopes and reflections of carers, healthcare professionals and policy makers.
What makes it stand out is how it's put together. The company builds intricate miniature worlds right in front of the audience using 32mm figurines, shoe-box style installations, turntables, micro-projection and immersive soundscapes. It's a multi-textural performance that works on a small scale, with the figurines and installations creating a detailed world that you watch being constructed as the show goes on. The soundscapes wrap around the whole thing, so it's as much about what you hear as what you see.
The critics have been quite specific about the mood. The Stage called it 'craft, heart and quiet fury', and The Guardian described it as 'an unmissable new piece in miniature... unique, handbuilt and profoundly experimental'. Those descriptions give you a good sense of what to expect: a carefully crafted, small-scale production that doesn't shy away from a heavy subject.
