A candlelight concert featuring Vivaldi's The Four Seasons and La Follia performed in the historic Merchants House of Glasgow.
Candlelight is bringing Vivaldi's Four Seasons to The Merchants House of Glasgow on Friday 13 November, with a second date on Friday 12 December. Both start at 6:15pm. The whole thing is played by candlelight, so the room is lit by hundreds of candles rather than the usual house lights.
The main event is The Four Seasons, Vivaldi's set of four violin concertos: Spring (RV 269), Summer (RV 315), Autumn (RV 293), and Winter (RV 297). It's one of those few pieces of classical music that almost everyone knows, and here it's played through in one go. Alongside it, they're adding La Follia, a variation on an old folk tune that's been a favourite for composers for centuries.
The venue is The Merchants House of Glasgow, at the corner of George Square and West George Street. It's the old Merchant Guild, established in 1605 and housed in its current John Burnet building since 1874. The Merchants' Hall is the room they're using, and it's full of intricate stained-glass windows and historic portraits. The tall windows look out over the city, so the performance sits right against the backdrop of Glasgow's architecture and mercantile history.
