A romantic string quartet concert featuring timeless classics and love songs, performed under candlelight at the historic Merchants House.
Candlelight brings its Valentine's Day Special to The Merchants House on Saturday 13 February 2027, with a local string quartet taking the stage in the Grand Hall. The whole thing is performed by candlelight, which is the signature of these concerts — they take a live musical experience and set it in a venue lit by candles rather than stage lights.
The programme is a long run of romantic melodies and classics. You'll hear 'Unchained Melody' by The Righteous Brothers, 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight?' and 'Your Song' by Elton John, 'A Whole New World' by Alan Menken, 'Tennessee' by Hans Zimmer, 'Out of Africa' by John Barry, 'Love Theme for Nata' by Ennio Morricone, 'Por Una Cabeza' by Carlos Gardel, 'La Vie En Rose' by Edith Piaf, 'Can't Help Falling in Love' by Elvis Presley, 'All You Need Is Love' by The Beatles, 'A Thousand Years' by Christina Perri, 'Shallow' by Lady Gaga, and 'My Heart Will Go On' by Celine Dion. It's a wide-ranging set that pulls from pop, film and traditional standards, all played on strings.
The venue is the Merchants House of Glasgow, at the corner of George Square and West George Street. It's a substantial Victorian building designed by John Burnet and opened in 1874, the fourth home of the Merchants House, a charitable organisation dating back to 1605 that still makes grants to educational institutions. The Grand Hall is finished with ornate ceilings, stained-glass windows, portraits and a sweeping marble staircase, and it holds around 200 people.
