A cross-genre performance where the familiar sounds of a string orchestra are pulled in unfamiliar directions, shaped by the distinctive power of the Scottish smallpipes, with visuals by Jonny Ashworth.
Brìghde Chaimbeul and the Scottish Ensemble play Tramway on Saturday 30 January 2027, as part of Celtic Connections. It's a cross-genre performance that puts the familiar sound of a string orchestra in unfamiliar directions, with the Scottish smallpipes pulling the strings along with it.
At its heart is the folklore and history of Skye. You'll hear traditional Gaelic waulking songs and the eerie tale of the Spòg Liath — 'The grey paw' — alongside the phases of the moon and the landscape of Scotland's islands. All that sits on a deep, earthy soundscape of heavy drones and rich string tones, so the whole thing stays rooted in the islands even as it moves away from the traditional.
