An evening of atmospheric indie folk songwriting by Bess Atwell, part of the Celtic Connections festival.
Bess Atwell plays Tramway on Thursday 28 January, as part of Celtic Connections 2027. She's billed as Bess Atwell and Support, so there'll be an opening act before she takes the stage. The night is an evening of atmospheric indie folk songwriting, and it sits within the wider festival, which runs from 14 to 31 January.
Atwell is one of contemporary folk's most compelling emerging voices, and her songwriting is intimate and emotionally resonant. She pairs deeply personal lyrics with delicate, expansive arrangements, blending folk-rooted craftsmanship with subtle electronic textures and dreamlike soundscapes. Much of the set will draw on acclaimed releases like Light Sleeper, with songs that explore themes of self-discovery, mental health and human connection with honesty and grace.
She cites Joni Mitchell's songwriting and the atmospheric folk of Fleet Foxes as influences, and her live performances balance quiet reflection with moments of emotional lift. The show takes place at Tramway, an international art space that commissions, produces and presents contemporary arts projects.
