Belle and Sebastian celebrate their 30th anniversary with a full performance of If You're Feeling Sinister and fan favourites.
Belle and Sebastian play the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Monday 21 December, their first Glasgow date in a while and part of the celebrations for their 30th anniversary. The band formed here in 1994, led by Stuart Murdoch, and built their following on a sound that blends folk-rock with 1960s pop.
The night is split into two. The first half is devoted to If You're Feeling Sinister, first released in 1996, played in full. It's an album that's gone on to hold a bit of a mythic status, a regular on 'greatest of all time' lists with songs that have turned up on countless mixtapes and playlists over the years. The Guardian described it as 'subtly poetic, wickedly funny, and gorgeously melodic'. After the interval, the second set gathers a further selection of the band's fan favourites from across their career.
It's a Glasgow band playing a Glasgow hall, and the 30th anniversary context puts the whole thing in perspective: they've been at this since 1994, and If You're Feeling Sinister came out when they were still early days. Hearing it in full, then moving on to the other songs that have stayed in the set, should give a decent sense of where they started and what's stuck.
