A film exploring creativity and resistance, presented as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival, with a post-screening discussion.
The Social Hub on Candleriggs Square hosts the Scottish premiere of Amanda on Saturday 24 October, from 5:00pm to 6:55pm. The film is directed by José Miguel Jiménez (Ireland, 2025) and is co-presented with Vox Scotland. After the screening, there's a discussion with Amanda Cullen.
Amanda follows a woman who has spent years painting in isolation, using art as both expression and refuge, before facing the challenge of speaking out about a painful past she wishes to leave behind. Once institutionalised and labelled by others, she reclaims her narrative through her canvases, which evoke the chaos of her experience and are marked by scars that mirror her own. As she prepares for her first retrospective and her story reaches national newspapers, she navigates the vulnerability of sharing both her art and her truth.
The screening is part of the 20th Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival, presented by the Mental Health Foundation under the theme 'Reflections', which brings together over 180 events across Scotland. It's a heavy one, though: the film is rated 18+ and deals with self-harm, suicide, institutional abuse and childhood sexual abuse.
