A semi-autobiographical comedy exploring teenage romance, identity and dyslexia, blending dark humour with graphic descriptions.
All My Friends Know I Cannae Spell plays at Òran Mór on Wednesday 4 November, from 7:00pm to 10:00pm. It's a semi-autobiographical comedy written by Meera Lavin, Mirren Fia and Niamh Scott, and those three are the ones you'll see on stage. The show looks at teenage romance, conflict, identity and dyslexia, and it's described as a story full of belly laughs and of coming to terms with a disability that no one can see but you.
The writing mixes dark humour with graphic descriptions, so it's not just a light trip down memory lane. The dyslexia part is the thread that runs through it all, and the whole thing is semi-autobiographical, so it's coming from a real place rather than a script written in a vacuum. If you've ever had to navigate that gap between how you're seen and how you actually feel, that's where a lot of the show sits.
As for the venue, Òran Mór is a cultural centre and meeting place in the heart of Glasgow's West End, housed in the converted Kelvinside Parish Church. Its name is Gaelic for 'great melody of life' or 'big song'. Refurbishment began in 2002 and it opened in June 2004 with two bars, two restaurants, a nightclub and private event space. It also launched the A Play, A Pie and A Pint lunchtime theatre programme, which now commissions and produces about 38 new plays each year.
