Rachel Podger leads the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in an evening of festive Baroque music by Handel, Vivaldi, Bach and Corelli.
Rachel Podger is back leading the Scottish Chamber Orchestra at the Glasgow Concert Hall on Friday 1 December, with a programme of Baroque music built around the Christmas season. It's part of the SCO's 26/27 Classical Season, and Podger takes the double role of director and violin.
The set leans on works traditionally associated with Christmas. Vivaldi's Il riposo per il Santissimo Natale and Corelli's Concerto Grosso in G minor Op.6 No.8, titled fatto per la notte di Natale, both sit right in that festive territory. Alongside them are Handel's Concerto a due Cori No.2, Locatelli's Concerto Grosso in F minor Op.1 No.8 — known as the Christmas Concerto — and Muffat's Sonata V from Armonico Tributo, written in Salzburg in 1682. Bach rounds it out with Orchestral Suite No.4.
Between them, the programme moves through a fair bit of ground: the grandeur of Handel, the more intimate charm of Corelli, and the brilliance of Bach. The SCO describes it as a pre-Christmas treat that shifts between moments of jubilation, serenity and virtuosity, with the Christmas-linked pieces providing the common thread.
