Stand-up showcase of established comics trying out new material at The Stand Comedy Club.
W.I.P.lash is on at The Stand Comedy Club this Wednesday 28 October, and if you've never been, it's a bit different from your usual comedy night. It's The Stand's brand-new showcase for established comics working up material for the Fringe or for tour shows. The whole point is that you're seeing the work-in-progress, not the polished version that'll end up on a DVD or a special later on.
One of the things that sets it apart is that the line-up is kept under wraps. Big names come in to try out new stuff alongside fresher acts getting to stretch their legs, and you don't know who's who until they step up to the mic. It's a bit of a gamble, which is part of the draw — you might find yourself in the room while a well-known comic is figuring out a new bit in real time.
The Stand itself is on York Place in the heart of Edinburgh, and it does a fair bit more than just this. It stages live stand-up throughout the year, drawing on touring headliners and established favourites alongside weekend mixed bills and the legendary Red Raw new-comedy night, and it's also a Fringe venue. So this is just one part of what they've got going on.
