Varna International Ballet brings its family production of 'The Nutcracker' to the Edinburgh Playhouse, set to Tchaikovsky's score.
Varna International Ballet bring The Nutcracker to the Edinburgh Playhouse on Thursday 14 January 2027, part of their UK season that year. It's the one most of us know by heart, set to Tchaikovsky's score and staged with glittering sets, costumes and traditional ballet.
The story starts on Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum house, where the local magician Drosselmeyer arrives with gifts, one of them a wooden nutcracker. As midnight strikes, toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse-king and his mouse-army battle the Nutcracker Prince, and the company travels through the Land of Snow to the Land of Sweets. It's billed as the most famous of fantasy ballets for all the family, so it's as much for kids as for anyone who just likes the classics.
