Formal Black Tie Mess Dinner held by The Royal Scots Club to commemorate the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar, in support of The Royal Marines Charity.
The Royal Scots Club is hosting the Trafalgar Night Dinner on Friday 23 October, a formal Mess Dinner steeped in naval custom and ceremony. It's held every year by the Royal Navy to commemorate the victory of 21 October 1805, when 27 British Royal Naval ships defeated a combined French and Spanish fleet of 33 warships and ended Napoleon's ambition to invade Britain. Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson secured the triumph but was killed on the quarterdeck of HMS Victory, and the dinner honours that victory while mourning that loss.
This year's sitting is hosted by The Royal Scots Club, a Georgian building with a rich history of high-profile events, and the evening is held in support of The Royal Marines Charity. The guest of honour is Brigadier Ian Gardiner RM, a Royal Marine who fought in the Dhofar War in Oman and the Falklands War and served as Equerry to the late Duke of Edinburgh; he's now a military-history lecturer and author.
