Solo exhibition of 47 new paintings by contemporary artist Jack Morrocco at Morningside Gallery.
Jack Morrocco has a new solo show, Touchstones, running at Morningside Gallery from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 8 November. It's 47 new paintings, and it's his sixth solo exhibition at the gallery, more than 50 years since he first started out at art college. The collection pulls together the full range of what he paints, rather than sticking to one particular theme.
One of the things that sets Morrocco apart from a lot of his contemporaries is that he's never settled into a single style. Instead, he works from a set of touchstones: particular places like Venice, the South of France, and the Mediterranean, the transformative effects of light, and treasured objects. He's long drawn inspiration from those settings and continues to look for the moment when light transforms an everyday scene — a pursuit that links him to Monet and the Impressionists.
He says the title Touchstones reflects the cyclical nature of his work, where returning to a comfort zone opens the door to new subjects and styles. The show fills the gallery's new-look space following extensive summer renovations, so it's a good time to see the place refreshed.
