Spoken word show by Morna Burdon weaving defiant poems, observations and songs of radical protest around immigration, climate change and revolution.
Morna Burdon brings The Sound of My Own Voice to Summerhall on Thursday 19 November, a spoken word show that follows on from Edinburgh's Push The Boat Out international poetry festival. Burdon is an Edinburgh-based performer, writer and director who has toured from Adelaide to Prague and the Edinburgh Fringe, and this one keeps the conversation going after the festival has wrapped.
It's built to challenge the status quo and takes its lead from the voices that often get dismissed, dehumanised or unheard. The hour weaves together defiant poems, incisive observations and songs of radical protest around immigration, climate change and revolution. There's a wide range to it: the hope in human creativity and connection in the face of artificial intelligence, a scathing response to an unsuspecting theatre critic, a portrait of solidarity for Gaza inside a Scottish housing scheme, and a father's intimate view of the conflict in Ukraine. It's a lot of ground to cover in one sitting, and it doesn't shy away from the political.
