The Smyths, the long-running tribute act to The Smiths, revisit 'The Queen Is Dead' in full and close with a 'Best of' for the album's 40th anniversary.
The Smyths are playing La Belle Angele on Friday 22 January 2027, as part of their 2026/2027 tour. The night is billed as The Queen Is Dead + Hits, and the set is built around the 40th anniversary of The Queen Is Dead: they play the album in full before closing with a best-of drawn from across The Smiths' back catalogue. If you know the record, you know it's one of the big ones, and hearing it from start to finish in one go is a different experience from picking out the singles.
For those who haven't come across them, The Smyths are a tribute to The Smiths and have been selling out shows for more than twenty years. They've picked up a fair bit of praise along the way, too. Stephen Street, the producer who worked with the original band, called them the most excellent tribute to their music and legacy. Broadcaster Jeremy Vine put it a bit more bluntly: 'To call them a tribute band is an insult... I closed my eyes and it was 1985'.
