Book launch of RJ Hunter's poetry collection 'The Nihilist', with the Loud Poets open mic at the Scottish Storytelling Centre.
RJ Hunter is launching his new collection, The Nihilist, at the Scottish Storytelling Centre on Sunday 29 November, with the evening starting at 5pm. Hunter is a poet, playwright and performer who first made his mark as the inaugural Loud Poets Grand Slam Champion; back in 2024, Corr Blimey described him as 'the future of the medium of spoken-word'. The Nihilist is published by SpeakEasy press.
As a title, it sounds bleak, but the book is a poetic journey through the worst year of Hunter's life and into the present, framed by grief, heartbreak and yearning. He tells it with the brevity, wit and character that have become his signature as a spoken-word artist, so it's as much about the delivery as the words on the page. It's the kind of thing that works better heard than read in silence, which is why a launch like this is the right way to introduce it.
Hunter won't be taking the stage alone. He's supported by Heather Rose, Drew Gill, Josh Cake and Tishe, so there's a full bill of spoken word to get through before he steps up. The night also doubles as the Loud Poets open mic, the fortnightly spoken-word night run by Mark Gallie at the centre, which means there's a wider community of voices around the main launch.

It's all happening at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, 43-45 High Street in the Old Town, on Sunday 29 November from 5pm. If you've followed Hunter's work as a poet and performer, this is the first chance to hear The Nihilist read aloud.
