A 70-piece concert orchestra, led by Michael Bawtree, brings to life the film scores of Hans Zimmer and John Williams.
The Music of Zimmer vs Williams comes to Usher Hall on Tuesday 29 December, a concert that puts two of the biggest names in film music, Hans Zimmer and John Williams, head-to-head. The whole thing is played by a 70-piece concert orchestra, and it's part of a UK tour that stops in Leicester, Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham, Glasgow, London and Swansea.
The set draws from the scores that have defined the cinematic landscape for decades. Zimmer's bold, immersive style is set against Williams' timeless, iconic themes, with music from The Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars, Harry Potter, E.T., Gladiator, Interstellar, War Horse and Jurassic Park. It's a broad sweep of film music, so you'll hear the big, brassy themes of the space and fantasy epics alongside the more atmospheric, textural work Zimmer is known for.
On stage, the 70-piece orchestra is made up of the London, Dublin and Manchester Concert Orchestras, joined by the Scottish Concert Orchestra and conducted by Michael Bawtree. With that many players, the sound is built for a room like Usher Hall rather than a smaller club or theatre.
