Over-18s night of post-punk anthems from The March Violets, with founding members Rosie Garland and Tom Ashton.
The March Violets play The Voodoo Rooms on Tuesday 3 November, with the set starting at 7:30 pm in The Speakeasy. They're a Leeds post-punk band with a history that goes back to the 1980s, and they'll be playing a mix of their older gothic rock and their more recent work.
If you've come across them through the early stuff, you'll recognise the names. They did BBC John Peel sessions in the eighties and put out indie chart successes like the Radiant Boys EP, Grooving in Green, Snake Dance and Turn to the Sky — that last one ended up in the John Hughes film Some Kind of Wonderful. After a break, they reunited in the 21st century and have since headlined festivals across Europe and the USA, and put out two sell-out double albums, Big Soul Kiss and Made Glorious, for Record Store Day in 2021 and 2022.
On stage, founding members Rosie Garland, a performer, poet and author, and Tom Ashton, guitarist and producer, are joined by bassist and vocalist Mat Thorpe. They've still been recording, too: in 2024 they released Crocodile Promises on Metropolis Records, their first album in ten years, so there's newer material to hear alongside the older songs.
