A live jazz performance that recreates the 1920s atmosphere of New Orleans, blending ragtime, brass and blues with spontaneous improvisation.
The Jazz Room comes to Assembly Roxy on Thursday 19 November, a live performance that takes you back to New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz. The room is designed to evoke the city's 1920s atmosphere, and the music follows suit: it leans on 'hot jazz', blending ragtime, brass and blues with moments of spontaneous improvisation. The set runs for around an hour.
The repertoire draws on New Orleans classics, with St. James Infirmary, When The Saints Go Marching In, On the Sunny Side of the Street, Basin Street Blues and Hello Dolly all on the list. It's the kind of music that doesn't need a lot of introduction — the sorts of tunes that practically define the early New Orleans sound.
Assembly Roxy, a live music venue in Edinburgh's Southside, programmes this alongside other jazz and soul nights, including tributes to Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong and a Marvin Gaye soul night. The evening is for over-18s, and tables are shared with seating assigned on a first-come, first-served basis within each zone. The venue is wheelchair accessible, and a cocktail from the bar can accompany the music.
