The Holiday (2006) is screened with a full concert orchestra playing Hans Zimmer's score in a live-in-concert format.
The Holiday is coming to Usher Hall on Tuesday 24 November, as part of a live-in-concert tour presented by Senbla. It's the 2006 Christmas rom-com you probably know, but instead of just watching it on a screen, a full concert orchestra will be playing the score live in the room. The film runs on an HD cinema-size screen, and the music is played in time with the action, so the score is something you hear as much as see.
For those who need a reminder, The Holiday was written, directed and produced by Nancy Meyers and stars Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black. It's about two women who meet on a home-exchange website and impulsively swap houses: Iris moves into Amanda's home in sunny California, while Amanda arrives in the snow-covered English countryside. Both end up finding an unexpected romance. The music was written by Hans Zimmer, who's picked up multiple Academy Awards and Golden Globes over his career.
This isn't a one-off Edinburgh night, either. It's part of an 18-date UK-wide tour running through November and December, so it's one of several stops the production is making across the country. Critics have described the format as 'a magical way to watch a Christmas movie' and 'a stroke of genius – a fabulous new way to see a film'.
