Slam and mystery spoken-word night pitting teams from Edinburgh and Glasgow against each other, staged by the collective Drafted! and featuring Shannon O' Neill.
The Edinburgh vs Glasgow Deathmatch! comes to The Canons' Gait on Wednesday 28 October, with doors opening at 6:30 PM and the show running from 7:00 to 9:30 PM. It's put on by Drafted!, the spoken word collective, and the premise is as straightforward as the title: two teams, one from Edinburgh and one from Glasgow, go head-to-head to settle which city has the stronger spoken word poetry scene. Each side plays for the glory of its home, so there's a bit of friendly rivalry built right into the night.
The format is a slam with a mystery element thrown in, and Shannon O' Neill will be appearing on the night. She's also set to launch an album as part of her hip-hop group, Apocalypse Theorists, so there's a new release tied into the evening. It's an 18+ event.
One thing that sets this apart from a standard ticketed night is the pay-what-you-can setup, with a minimum suggested donation of £5. Any profit made goes back into future Drafted! events, and the higher donations help cover the featured poet's fee, the winning team's prize, and the running costs of the night. So, if you're in the mood to chip in a bit more, it goes straight back into the local scene.
