A day of improv games and exercises to explore clowning techniques and how they can transform the way you improvise.
TBC Improv UK are running a one-day workshop called Clown In Improv at Summerhall on Saturday 14 November, from 10:30am to 4pm. It's a practical session aimed at improvisers who want to connect with their inner clown, and it starts with the fundamentals of clowning through games and exercises.
The day is framed as one of play, discovery and glorious failure. The focus is on how clowning techniques can change the way you improvise: being more present, vulnerable and responsive on stage; embracing failure as fuel; connecting directly with the audience; making simple, delightful choices; opting for strong commitment; and using genuine reactions to create surprising comedy. If you've been doing improv for a while, it's a chance to look at the craft from a different angle.
TBC Improv UK runs a whole range of improv workshops and classes at Summerhall, so this sits alongside a few other things you can get stuck into. There's a two-hour 'Welcome To Improv' drop-in class for beginners, a four-week 'Intro To Improv Course (101)' for those wanting to go a bit deeper, and the 'Monthly Improv Jam', an inclusive drop-in jam for all with no experience required. They also put on 'Fresh Faces Of Improv - Shortform!', a showcase of up-and-coming performers. If you're just starting out, the drop-in jam or the intro course are good places to begin before moving on to something like this.
