Object theatre and puppetry bring F.W. Murnau's silent horror film Nosferatu to life in a suitcase, a tiny world tale for older children and adults.
Suitcase Stories: Nosferatu runs at Summerhall on 30 and 31 October, a couple of days just before Halloween. It's a tiny world tale for older children (8+) and adults, and the whole thing unfolds inside a single suitcase. Using puppetry and object theatre, it brings F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent horror classic Nosferatu to life in miniature.
If you've seen the original film, you'll recognise the story: the arrival of the vampire Count Orlok in a small town, the creeping dread, and the struggle to stop him. The production is a celebration of German expressionist cinema, and seeing it shrunk down to the size of a suitcase changes the way you look at it. Instead of the sweeping, distorted shadows of the big screen, the horror is contained and intimate, and you're close enough to see the puppetry and the objects at work.
It's a show that works for two audiences at once. It's pitched for older children from eight, so it's a good way to introduce them to a piece of cinema history without it being too much for them, and it's just as much for adults who remember the film or want to see it retold in this format. The funding came from Creative Scotland.
