Resident duo Stu and Garry improvise comedy scenes from audience suggestions in their long-running show at The Stand.
Stu and Garry are back at The Stand Comedy Club on Tuesday 6 October, with further dates on 3 November and 1 December. They're the resident duo at The Stand, and this improvised show has become something of an Edinburgh institution.
The format is as simple as it gets: the pair take suggestions from the audience and weave them into scenes of improvised comedy on the fly. There's no script and nothing rehearsed, so the night depends entirely on what the room throws at them. The organisers note that after years of doing the show, it still turns up original ideas.
It's a good place to get a feel for the club itself. The Stand opened in 1995 and now runs three purpose-built venues across Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle. It started as a hobby by comedy enthusiasts and grew into a successful commercial company without losing its commitment to developing new Scottish comedy. That programme ranges from the Red Raw beginners' nights and sketch shows to the all-female Wicked Wenches, alongside Irish and Scottish showcases and solo shows by better-known names. Performers and critics alike rate the clubs among the best comedy venues in the world, with just over a hundred thousand people coming through the doors last year.
