Soul and funk powerhouse St. Paul and the Broken Bones perform live at The Queen's Hall in Edinburgh.
St. Paul and the Broken Bones play The Queen's Hall on Monday 26 October, with support. It's a soul and funk night from an eight-piece band that's been together since 2011, when they formed in Birmingham, Alabama. Paul Janeway fronts the group on vocals, and the sound is built around a heavy brass section of trumpet, trombone and saxophone.
They made their recording debut in 2014 with Half the City, which gave them the platinum hit 'Call Me'. Since then, they've moved from old-school soul into sleek summertime funk and disco, as on 2018's Young Sick Camellia, and the fine-arts-inspired The Alien Coast in 2022. It's a fair bit of ground to cover from one record to the next, and the set should draw from across those years.
They've shared stages with The Rolling Stones, Lizzo and The Black Pumas, and played Coachella, Lollapalooza, Glastonbury and Bonnaroo. Sir Elton John also invited them to perform at his Oscar party. The Queen's Hall itself started life as Hope Park Chapel in 1823 and remains one of Edinburgh's oldest independent live music, comedy and spoken word venues.
