The London African Gospel Choir re-imagines Paul Simon's Graceland, marking its 40th anniversary with soaring voices and vibrant harmonies.
The London African Gospel Choir are at The Queen's Hall on Wednesday 18 November, with their re-imagining of Paul Simon's Graceland marking the album's 40th anniversary. It's a tribute, not a Paul Simon appearance — he isn't performing in the show — and the choir takes the lead, reworking the songs through their own sound. They'll be playing the classics you know, like 'You Can Call Me Al' and 'Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes', and the whole thing is built around the African musical heritage that ran through the original record.
For context, the choir — also known as the London Community Gospel Choir — describes itself as Britain's first renowned contemporary performance-touring gospel choir band, and they work across gospel, pop, soul, jazz, R&B and classical. That's the blend they're bringing to Graceland, with the songs carried by soaring voices and vibrant harmonies. They describe the show as a live experience that connects generations and transcends borders, and the 40th anniversary is the occasion they're building it around.
