A school singing concert by the students of SJM Performance Academy, with musicals, pop, dance and Disney songs, raising money for the Edinburgh Cat & Dog home.
SJM Sings runs at Summerhall on Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 December, two evenings of singing from the students of SJM Performance Academy. It's a full school concert, so you'll see the academy's students taking the stage to show off their own vocal talents rather than a guest headliner.
The repertoire is a broad one. They're pulling from musicals and modern pop, and adding in danceable tunes, Disney and country. There's also a 'songs we wish we could' section, which gives a glimpse into what they're aiming for beyond the setlist. With that mix, it's the kind of night where you'll hear a showtune followed by a pop hit and then a country track, rather than one single style running through.
Beyond the music, the event raises money for the Edinburgh Cat & Dog Home, so it's a night that does something for the city as well as providing the entertainment. The venue is the Dissection Room at Summerhall, which is Edinburgh's biggest arts venue, open all year round and home to a community of creative artists and businesses, including a pub, cafƩ, brewery and distillery. Its year-round live music programme, 'Nothing Ever Happens Here...', has brought acts like Billy Bragg, Sun Kil Moon, The Sun Ra Arkestra and Charlotte Church to the building. Summerhall won the Dan Crawford Innovation Award at the 2015 Empty Space... Peter Brook Awards, was shortlisted for The Stage Fringe Venue of the Year in 2014 and 2017, won The Herald Scottish Culture Award 2019 for Outstanding Venue and received a Cycle Friendly Employer Award from Cycle Scotland in 2019.
