Theatrical show by composer and theatre artist Sheherazaad, blending dystopic folk-noir and experimental pop with South Asian musical sensibilities.
Sheherazaad plays Sneaky Pete's on Friday 22 January, a night presented by Sneaks Events. She's an American composer and theatre artist whose work sits somewhere between dystopic folk-noir and experimental pop, with South Asian musical sensibilities running through it. It's a sound that's earned her a reputation as one of the more distinctive new voices in contemporary music.
She was raised in California in a second-generation immigrant household and now divides her time between India and Brooklyn. That distance comes through in her songwriting, which she describes as exploring broken tongues and unbelonging. Her lyrics modernise existing Hindi-Urdu poetic forms, working through questions of displacement, mother tongue and imagined homelands. Her voice is described as alternative folk or experimental ballad.

Since the release of her acclaimed Qasr EP, produced by Arooj Aftab, she's toured internationally and composed for New York's Off-Broadway stages. This is a 14+ event, and the room at Sneaky Pete's holds 100, so it'll be a fairly small crowd around her. Doors open at 19:00, and tickets are £19.40, which includes the booking fee.
