Scottish premiere screening of 'The Queen and the Smokehouse', a Polish documentary about the legendary smokehouse of Łeba on the Baltic coast, with short films from the Scottish Documentary Institute.
The Queen and the Smokehouse makes its Scottish premiere at Out Of The Blue Drill Hall on Sunday 15 November, from 7pm to 9pm. It's the debut film from director Iga Lis, and it's a portrait of the Polish Baltic coast, where wind, salt and smoke shape the day-to-day. The central figure is Miecia, the woman behind Łeba's iconic smokehouse, who spent forty years building a place defined by craft, character and community.
It's an intimate, atmospheric piece of filmmaking that takes its time with its subject. The film runs 77 minutes, in Polish with English subtitles, and carries a 15+ rating. It's already had a fair run on the festival circuit: it opened the 65th Krakow Film Festival, picked up an ORŁY Polish Film Awards nomination, and took home the Jantar Award for Best Cinematography and the Audience Award at the Sopot Film Festival. This is its first Scottish screening.
The main feature doesn't stand alone on the bill. The night includes a selection of short films presented with the Scottish Documentary Institute, with Community Theatre among them, so you'll get a bit more than just the one film. It's a double bill of documentary work rather than a single screening.
