The Scottish Chamber Choir, conducted by Iain McLarty, celebrates Scotland's musical heritage with Burns songs, Gaelic melodies, James MacMillan settings and Ailie Robertson's 'The Lost Lichts'.
Scottish Chamber Choir are at Stockbridge Parish Church on Saturday 21 November, with a programme they've called A Scots Musical Miscellany. It's a broad sweep of Scotland's musical heritage, running from 16th-century choral music and post-Renaissance polyphony through to traditional Gaelic melodies and Burns songs.
The centrepiece is The Lost Lichts, a work commissioned by the choir in 2024 from the award-winning composer and harpist Ailie Robertson. It sits alongside shimmering Burns settings by James MacMillan and the choir's own compositions, so the newer material takes up a good chunk of the evening. The rest of the set reaches back further, with the polyphony and the Gaelic melodies providing the older bookends.
Iain McLarty conducts, and the whole thing is staged in the atmospheric surroundings of Stockbridge Parish Church, which fits the mood of the programme. It's a long look at Scottish music across a few centuries, with the commissioned Robertson piece as the anchor.
